“Manufacturing" is inspired by John Steinbeck's idea that all Americans are just temporarily embarrassed millionaires. This piece is about settling down, buying a cookie cutter home, living a cookie cutter life. Like many, a manufactured homogenized single story house is professed as the quintessential American dream. And we eat that notion up, never ceasing to dream, plot, or scheme for the next big jackpot or lottery ticket, when what we have is more than enough.
